Christopher Moorhouse, a Detroit
Red Wings fan plead guilty to engaging in a prohibited activity and was fined
$200 for throwing a banana at an African American hockey player during a game
in London, Ontario.
In a pre-season game between the
Detroit Red Wings and the Philadelphia Flyers, Moorhouse threw a banana at
Flyers forward Wayne Simmonds, while Simmonds was trying to score.
The New York Daily News reports:
Moorhouse, who was charged with
engaging in a prohibited activity, could have been hit with a more serious
offense or even a hate crime.
“You have to demonstrate and be
motivated by hatred,” London police chief Brad Duncan told reporters not long
after the game. “Although the banana did hit the ice, it did not interfere with
the play so it didn’t meet the mischief threshold.”
